He had rays of light streaming out of his hand and that is where his power was hidden. The plague fled before him and fireballs came out of his feet. Acts chapter 4 in verse 13.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ignorant men, they were amazed and took note of the fact that they had been with Jesus. The title of my message today is finding God's power. Finding God's power.

The early disciples walked in great power and authority. After times you wished you could have that same power. Perhaps you wished you could carry some kind of anointing.

Maybe you've looked at other great men and women of God that have risen up through the years who've also walked in power and you thought, oh I wish the Lord could use me like that. But somehow our God seems to be hidden away, doesn't it? We just can't seem to get our hands on it. It's like it's been hidden from us.

Where can we find it? Well I hope to give you some answers today. I'm going to give you all the answers because I'm still learning them myself. Let's look at the power of God in a fresh way.

As we look into the New Testament particularly, we find that two kinds of power are mentioned. There are two Greek words that are both periodically translated by the word power in the Old English. The first one is the power of authority.

The Greek word exousia. Second one is power of ability. The Greek word is dunamis which we get our word dynamic.

I want to look at these two and help you to understand the difference between them and how important they are and I'm just going to lay a groundwork which is going to build up to where I want to take you today. The power of authority is always delegated down from a higher authority. Perhaps when you were younger, your mom or your dad put you in charge.

They said we're going out, you're in charge of the rest of the kids while we're gone. You were given temporary authority. You were the head of the home for that short time.

Perhaps that was one of your first tastes of power. Everyone's experienced it at different times, the power of authority that is. I remember many years ago, I was given the privilege of acting in my boss's place.

Now I wasn't by any means a senior employee and I've never been the teacher's pet but for the first time in my life I was the boss's pet simply because I'd been to the same school as his kids and I'd got the highest level of education at school and he was very impressed with that and so he pushed and pushed for me to get a pay increase and he said when he's going on leave he said I want Les to act in my place. Well you know what? That was quite a jump. I got the corner office.

Little me. All these older more mature senior people they'd been working there for years and here was me in the corner office being the boss and people were coming to me and saying is it right if I go off early today? I'm asking me. I finally had authority.

I could decide things. Wow. That was quite a feeling.

Of course getting the extra pay which is the difference between my pay and his was pretty huge. That alone was a pretty good incentive but you know the best part was just having some authority. Instead of being the little nobody clerk I was now supervisor.

It's nice to have authority. The power of authority is a very exciting thing, isn't it? I spent a short time in the military doing national service and there I saw the power of rank and my friends who were promoted ahead of me suddenly became higher than me and instead of being my buddies they now became my bosses and I had to jump and do what they say because they now had authority. Isn't it amazing what a couple of little things on here, a couple of stripy things, what a difference it makes to a person as they rise up in authority.

Authority is a pretty powerful thing. It's a very exciting thing and I think it's something that all of us somehow aspire to have. Now there's something you need to know about authority.

Firstly you need to know that you have it. If you don't other people are going to take advantage of you. They're going to treat you like you don't have authority and if you don't realize the authority that you have you're going to find yourself submitting to somebody who's actually below you.

So although you may have been delegated authority if you are not fully aware of it you can't enjoy the privileges of it and instead of being the leader you will become the follower but when you know and are aware of the authority that you've been given suddenly you stand up tall and you start calling the shots and you start taking the leadership over those that are under you. Now authority has to be manifested. You see if I've got authority and I stand there and I say well you know you know I'm just little me you know.

I'm just weak little insecure me. Do you know what? Stronger people are below me they're going to run all over me. They're going to run all over me if I let them.

I've got to manifest that authority and say hey you don't you dare. I'm in charge here don't ever forget it. Okay you get it? See you've got to manifest that authority.

Firstly you need to know that you have it and then you need to use it because you have authority you're going to have to make decisions and to carry all that out is going to require a little thing called boldness. Boldness. You know it's amazing the power of boldness.

Well what is it kind of it's really just assertion of your will over somebody else and confidence in who you are and you know the amazing thing is when you manifest that boldness people will bow. Then you can go to somebody and say please will you do this for me and you'll find them without even thinking they start doing what you say. You probably don't even have authority over them but just your boldness kind of gives the impression that you do have authority and people will submit to boldness.

It's the bold people of this world that are having all the success. Well you know I don't want to push myself you know I'm just being I'm just being humble. You can't be humble when you have authority.

Yes you can show humility with strength. That's another thing altogether but you got to be confident and you got to show that confidence and you got to show boldness. Otherwise what is the point of having that authority? It's going to accomplish absolutely nothing.

Now when you are given authority it's given to you full blown at full power. From the moment authority is delegated to you, you are in that position to exercise that authority. There's no progression, there's no development, there's no working your way into it.

Yes you may take a while to feel comfortable with it and start to use it the way you should but from that point when somebody who is above you says I'm putting you in charge from that point you're in charge. It's complete. There's no delays and that's not going to change unless later they demote you again and take away your authority.

Once you've been given that authority you stand in that place and you will continue in that place and it becomes instant. Now how do we go about getting this authority? Well even in this world usually authority is only given to those who qualify for it. You're going to have to be worthy somehow of that authority before a higher authority is going to trust you and say okay I'm giving some of my authority to you.

Why? Because you've shown me that you have what it takes. You've shown me your attitude, you've shown me your submissiveness to me. There's a whole lot of quality isn't it? And I guess each authority has a different thing they're looking for but at the end of the day the authority is looking to you and saying is this person worthy to receive part of my authority that I can delegate it down to them.

Now you understand the power of authority? Let's look at the power of ability. The power of ability is usually received not so much by delegation but by association. You see something in somebody else and you want it.

You begin to desire it. Oh I wish I could play the guitar like that. I wish I could sing like that.

I wish I could whatever they do right and the chances are you going to ask and saying hey how can I how can I learn to do what you do? How did you get to do that? I'm really curious to know because man I would love to be able to do what you do. I'd love to have the abilities that you have. It's a whole jersey in a weekend you know.

How do you do that? You know I put these two needles together and I get them bent and you please show me how do you do it? I don't know what is it that you desire? Any ability? Okay and so you spend time with a person and you watch them and you bombard them with questions and then you start to copy them to see whether you can do the same thing. Now an ability doesn't come full blown. An ability has to be developed and it takes time to perfect.

It takes practice to make perfect. Authority you can get it instant like that bam and it's yours but ability could take you months or years before you have come to the place where you have the ability to do that thing. Now some people have got ability without knowing it.

Perhaps they're too humble or they're just insecure or maybe they're just too doff to know that actually they have a skill that's pretty unique. Usually they'll look at everybody else and say I wish I could do that. The chances are you may be able to do something that other people can't do and one day somebody's going to say you know I wish I could do what you do and you say what that? Oh there's nothing special about that.

She's somebody else it could be. Sometimes you have inherent abilities you're not even aware of. Sometimes you have to get together with somebody who can draw them out of you and show you.

Somebody who noticed it and can say have you realized what you can do? I want to encourage you to do more of that. Now if an ability is there it will manifest itself either consciously or unconsciously. Even an insecure person can do something that is skillful.

Like sometimes the insecure more analytical type people have tremendous skills and abilities and sometimes they're just doing it behind the scenes. But when an ability is there it will manifest itself. Yes you must choose whether you're going to do it or not but usually you don't have to choose to assert your will on somebody else to do.

Just self-control is all you need. I'm going to sit down I'm going to do this. Doesn't involve other people.

Okay as I said doesn't come full blown. You get better with practice and unfortunately with lack of use you begin to lose it. It's known as the law of use.

What you don't use you lose. Come on I'm sure there's something that you used to be able to do years ago when you were younger. You were probably really good at it but if somebody would ask you to do it now you'd say oh you know I haven't done that in years.

I haven't done that in years. You know I learned to play the accordion when I was in my teens. You know I haven't touched an accordion for probably about 20 or more years.

I don't even know if I know how to hold it anymore and probably I will get back to it pretty quickly and say you know it's like falling off a bicycle. Eventually once you've learned to do it you do it again. But you know for a while you're going to be a little bit incapable.

Certainly not in a position to compete with somebody else in the same thing. So an ability has got to be developed and it's got to be maintained otherwise you're going to lose it. Now these two different powers and they are very different but they work together and that is why in the English language certainly in the early King James they often use the word power for both of those because they have similarities and they overlap and they complement one another.

Now which is the greater of the two? Which is the greater of the two? Let me answer that to you from the scriptures. In Luke chapter 10 in verse 19 Jesus said to his disciples I'm giving you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and also authority over all the dynamic ability of the enemy. You won't see that in the King James.

Use the word power for both of them. There's two different powers. One is exousia the other one is dunamis.

Jesus said I'm giving you authority exousia and that exousia is going to overcome the ability the dunamis of the enemy. So authority actually is greater than ability. It can overshadow ability authority produces leadership and authority and ability they work together.

You see when you add ability to authority people respect you a little bit more have a greater confidence in you because not only are you the boss you can actually do the job better than them. Yeah but the boss you know the boss was just his boss's favorite or it was a nephew or a relative or somebody and he got given the position and he's stupid. Yeah you got to submit to that authority but you know it would be a bit easier if the guy at least had some intelligence had some ability to do something.

I mean you got to teach him how to do his job for goodness sakes and you see that ability can enhance authority and give it a greater power and a greater influence and by the same token if you have an ability and you add authority to it it brings that ability into a new focus and gives it a far greater scope because now authority makes you a leader and as a leader you now have greater capability of exercising that ability that you have so you have a greater influence. Oh you know when are we going to get to the spiritual part? I'm getting there. Okay you see we are given spiritual authority and spiritual power and I want to show you how these principles work together in our lives in our spiritual lives and in our ministries.

From the day you were born again you were given authority you were given the right to use the name which is above every other name the name of Jesus and Philippians 2 verse 10 says at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of those who are in heaven those who are on earth and those who are in the world below the realm of the dead. That means as a believer you actually have authority over the angels of heaven you have authority over the circumstances that face you in this world and the demon powers must bow to you because in the name of Jesus you have authority over them and because of that we have the ability to move yes the ability is not a good term because it'd be confusing we have the capability of moving into something more because as a believer your authority began the day you were born again but now God makes available to you in addition the abilities that he gives by the dynamic power of his Holy Spirit. The Bible calls those the gifts of the Spirit and now what happens is you take the authority you have in the name of Jesus and you add the abilities that the gifts of the Spirit gives you you move to a new level a much higher level well does that mean you are now in ministry does that mean you're a leader in the church does that mean you're a pastor or a teacher or a prophet no no no we're not even close there yet you're just a believer and as a believer an ordinary believer you have the opportunity to combine these two things together and move to a whole new level.

In Mark chapter 16 reading from verse 7 Jesus said these words to his disciples and to the future church and these miraculous signs will accompany those who have believed in my name they will cast out demons they will speak with new tongues they will take up serpents and if they drink any deadly thing it will not harm them they will lay hands on sick people and they will become well in that list we see authority and ability beginning to flow together in my name you shall cast out demons what does that require authority you don't need an anointing or an ability to cast out demons in the name of Jesus demon come out you have authority to command them in the name the next one it begins to transition you shall speak without the tongues you don't have the authority to speak in tongues but he gives you the ability by the anointing power of the holy spirit and the gifts of the spirit so we start with authority then we add ability to it and then we move from there and bring the two together isn't that interesting that we start as believers with authority then when we receive the holy spirit what happens we speak in tongues and we enter into God's abilities now that we combine those two together the rest of them can be applied it will take up serpents if they drink any deadly thing it will not harm them they will lay hands on the sick and they shall recover we're slowly talking about believers here we're not speaking about evangelists we're not speaking about anybody who's had ministry training we're speaking about an ordinary believer and now we come to understanding the difference as we transition beyond being a with authority in the name of Jesus who has learned to operate the gifts of the spirit and add the power and the power of ability to the power of authority combined together we have a believer who can rise up and do amazing things in the early church some of the most amazing things were done with the deacons and deacon is not a spiritual office it's just a job to take care of the money but both Philip and Stephen did signs and wonders amongst the people only later Philip became known as an evangelist but you see as you do these together you begin to transition upwards into a ministry which the bible calls the five-fold ministry and then we have another term which if you've studied with us i'm sure you've come across and that's ministry office what is the difference between a ministry office and a plain ministry i think you're going to understand this better now with what i've shared with you how do you get a ministry oh you know god chose my ministry before i was born yeah he knew you before you were born and yes he did make choices based on his foreknowledge but you see everybody is given the opportunity to do a ministry and we start with the plain bodily ministries each of us having a desire to be used by god in a different way and so as we transition into the leadership ministries we begin to focus some of those things but you start a ministry firstly by desiring it oh yeah i really would like to minister to the last i'd like to minister to god's people and help them and encourage them i would really love to just help give people direction i would love to just teach the word so you must desire that and as you desire that you can develop because remember a ministry is an ability it's not going to come full blown it's going to take time to develop it and you may need somebody to help you you may need somebody as a model that you can copy and over time you'll develop that until you're flowing very well in a ministry now what's the difference between ministry and office oh this is a whole question that's been debated through the years and i i've tried to explain it from the beginning and over time i've i realized that my explanation was too simplistic at one stage i said that a ministry is what you do in offices who you are but there's a bit more to than that you see to move into office requires more than desire it requires change it means you're going to have to pass some tests you're going to have to write some exams you're going to have to qualify why because office is not ministry it's authority you see that when you move from ministry to office you are given a new level of authority and so if you are in prophetic ministry and you're functioning as a prophet when you are trained and qualify as a prophet in office god gives you a key sometimes two golden key for ministry and the silver key for business and that gives you authority to add to your ministry and as we saw when you combine authority and ability together you get a very powerful combination so the person who's in office stands at a far higher level of influence and leadership in the body of christ now in office you don't rely on your ministry abilities you rely on the authority that god has given you you don't come and pray and minister you take that key and on purpose you choose to lock or unlock because you've got the authority to do that and the moment you're given that authority it comes full blown oh yeah you know i'm you do i have the right as a prophet or do i have to work my way into it from the moment you were placed in office you had full authority of the prophetic office the same for the apostle and the same for the teacher because those are the three office ministries so office enhances ministry it takes it to a whole new level now as we look at the five-fold ministry we see that the lowest of the five is actually the evangelist now who's the one who moves in the signs and wonders and performs the miracles little philip the deacon goes to samaria and starts carrying out signs and wonders well who qualified him to do that did they give him permission was he delegated by the apostles in jerusalem with the authority to go no no he was just a deacon the only authority he was given was the authority to collect the money and help supervise the distribution of it to the widows that's all he was given that's the only authority he had he was given no authority to go and move in signs and wonders and so he became qualified to be later called an evangelist but he actually never rose any higher than that now we look at the evangelists even today who know how to move in the external anointing who know how to move in signs and wonders who are used to perform miracles of healing and we say wow i wish god could use me like that is that your greatest aspiration what if god's called you to be a prophet well you know i would love to move in gifts of healing and miracles but god's called me to be a prophet so my role is to prophesy now that's your ministry role yes but you see you've already moved up from the evangelist to a higher level that means what the evangelist does you should be able to do also and when you add office to it moves to a whole new level an apostle has a far greater ability to perform signs and wonders than an evangelist because an apostle stands in office and is able to combine authority with the ministry we've kind of missed it out you know and yet it's staring us there in the face we see Elijah and Elisha way back there in the old testament we're performing miracles but they were prophets we got caught in the rut of saying as a prophet we're going to teach you to prophesy and we'll leave the signs and wonders to the evangelists you see the mistake that we make and so we see there are different levels of ministry that we can operate in and as you're listening to this now you might say well you know i'm just an ordinary believer or you may say well you know i yes i i'm moving into the five-fold ministry but i've never been placed in office yet or you may be saying well i'm in office so should i be bothering with this should i be concentrating on the higher calling let me repeat what i've taught you today already ordinary believers have authority in the name of jesus and they have the right to develop and to use the gifts of the spirit when you move beyond that into a five-fold ministry calling i'm not talking about office but a ministry calling what happens is you begin to focus those spiritual gifts into one specific direction if you're an evangelist you're focusing it towards the winning of the lost if you're a teacher you're focusing it towards teaching people the word you're a shepherd you're focusing it towards building the body of christ and encouraging people if you're a prophet you're focusing it towards helping people find their place in the body by revelation and prophetic words once you move to the office level and it changes and you now have this greater authority to enhance your ministry and so as you combine these two you should be able to move at a greater level of ministry that means a teacher should be able to move in miracles no no but hang on the teacher they just teach the word have you ever seen a teacher move in signs and wonders they don't have time for that they're busy doing bible studies long complicated scriptures and things like that when last did you see a teacher killing the sick well the first one was jesus another very powerful one was paul you know when paul performed the greatest miracles of his whole ministry was when he spent two years in a bible school teaching and the bible says at that time god did special miracles by the hand of paul in that clothing items and materials that were had come from his body were taken and laid on people and they got healed it was the greatest level of signs and wonders that paul had ever performed and he was not functioning as an evangelist traveling around like he did he was staying in one place and teaching well you know god's called me to be a teacher i used to give the lord the same argument we told me to move into the prophetic and i said but i'm a teacher the prophet can move in miracles and actually the prophet should be moving in miracles just as elijah and elisha did it should be normal and natural for the prophet to move in the apostles paul said the signs of an apostle were proved amongst you in signs and wonders and miracles the apostle should be moving at a higher level than the evangelist so where do you stand today you're saying well you know i'm just an ordinary little believer i will leave the fancy stuff to the to the big evangelists out there i will leave the the fancy stuff to the apostles jesus carried out two-man activities as he walked this earth and you can read it in the gospels you'll see it all the way through he taught the people and he healed them holiday taught the people and he healed them two main functions and he he gave probably more time to healing than he did to teaching probably because there was a bigger demand but i think he tried to do the two equally and we can do the same no matter what your level you can do both you can teach and you can heal the sick signs and wonders can be done in the name of jesus you can start giving out what you know right now and you're teaching the moment you share what you've learned what god showed you in the word you are becoming a teacher you need to start developing the spiritual gifts add that and start developing one of the five-fold ministry and if god's brought you all the way to office you need to learn how to take that higher level of authority now when you do expect your spiritual abilities and the gifts of the spirit that are in you expect those to increase in magnitude and in power what are we waiting for today the lord reminded me a very important picture and he challenged me afresh the body of christ is lying asleep folks we're making excuses and satan is bound us up and covered us over with junk people are dying all around us we're waiting for the odd little evangelist to rise up and they make a name for themselves because they're the great big healers throwing these great big crusades most of the healing jesus performed he just performed while he was walking around people come visit him in the home and he prayed for them he's busy preaching and they drop a guy through the roof and he heals it let me show you the difference i'm going to end on this between moving in that at a lower level and moving in that at a higher level the evangelist as i've taught under the ministry evangelist evangelist operates in the external anointing of god in other words there's a power of god that comes upon them and while that anointing is on them they are able to perform miracles and move in signs and wonders if that anointing is not on them they can't do a thing and if you read their life stories and and find out more about them you'll find out some of them have taught that when that anointing lifts off them they can't do anything i've seen preachers who will say the anointing is here i can pray for the sick now and then they'll say i'm sorry the anointing is lifted i can't flow in the gifts of healing anymore because it's not operating see it's totally sovereignly under god's control i mean god chooses to use you god uses you i've seen some of the great evangelists of the past like katherine coolman would stand up there in the meeting and have zero anointing and she'll sing until it comes once it started to come she started to operate bam bam bam bam signs and wonders miracles start to take place evangelists totally reliant on a special anointing because they're not operating in authority now jesus didn't operate that way did he the leper could come to him and say lord if you're willing you can clean me jesus said i want to you be clean he could do it at will in the same way that a prophet can take the prophetic key and at will lock and unlock and the apostle at an even higher level so if you're in office don't envy that little evangelist who just relies on a little anointing god's giving you something greater you need to be able to come to the place where as you add authority to that anointing you can call on that anointing by choice peter walked in that anointing he walked down the street and he shadow healed people all operated in that see it was more than an anointing there's a combination of anointing or ability and authority now if you've just got authority you're not going to be successful you may be successful where demons are concerned because they must bow but when a physical healing is needed when a miracle needs to take place in a person's body you're going to need the anointing well how do we get the anointing that's another message altogether maybe i'll cover that another time jesus desperately needed the anointing jesus had all the authority but right in the middle of a conference or crusade jesus disappeared where's he gone he ran off into the desert to go and spend a few hours with the father why the anointing was starting to wear off he needed to go and charge up again so if you want to flow in the anointing it's going to take time and effort if you want to learn to play the guitar don't think you're going to learn three easy chords over a weekend and play the guitar you're going to have to practice it until you get better and better are we waiting for it just to come on us don't we i wish the lord just anoint me you know just one day it'll just drop on me bam and i have the the power to heal the sick remember this is an ability it's got to be developed and it's going to take time and that's going to cost you and if you're not prepared to pay that price you're not going to get it and you may stand in great authority but you will not perform miracles and signs and wonders until you learn to develop both of those together but if god has already begun to use you in some of the gifts of the spirit and as you've continued to develop them and you will continue to develop them over time if you desire it it's all it takes to develop an ability is a desire and that desire has got to be strong enough to drive you to practice for hours a day if necessary it's the last time you spend a couple of hours in prayer i'm not talking about praying you know i ran out of requests in two minutes not that kind of praying you don't even need to talk to pray you just need to be in his presence and soak in and soak up the power that's in him just listen to him and then to have him say tomorrow this is what's going to happen you get a vision of a future event and you wait for that event to happen jesus said i only do what i see the father do some of the famous evangelists of the past have operated the same way they've seen in a vision a circumstance in which god performed a miracle and they won't even start to pray until every person in that vision is in place now how do they get that a being in the presence of the lord many of them they just learned to flow in the anointing gaston coleman apparently never spent hours in prayer and yes she performed some of the greatest miracles because she knew how to flow in the anointing well if you're happy with that and you just want to be an evangelist that's good personally i'm not happy with that i'd like to have that anointing on tap see now i've developed that where the prophetic is concerned if somebody comes for ministry and i'm going to minister to them prophetically i don't spend a day in fasting and prayer before they arrive to get myself ready don't have to because when i minister to that person god will give me what they need and i know how to step into that place and get a prophetic word and to get a revelation i know i did tap into it well i'm learning to move into the other one now and i'm going to get there one of these days that's my desire very strong core desire and i'm doing everything i can to move into that it's up to you what do you want how do you want god to use you are you satisfied with what you have or would you like more see there's always a price to pay when it comes to the abilities there's a price of the effort that you're going to have to make to develop it if you want to move into high authority the price is going to be death passing tests failing tests being chiseled each of them requires a different thing imagine if you can put the two of them together how god could use you you won't be sitting as an ordinary little person in the pews anymore you won't even be standing behind the pulpit he'll be walking down the street and you'll see a lame man then you'll say i'm going to pray for you to stand up in the name of jesus pull him out of his wheelchair who would we dare he did it he developed them both so what i want to accomplish today is just to encourage and motivate you to aim for more aim for more god could use you way beyond your dreams but you need to want it because he's not going to give you anything that you don't desire and if you want to move up you will pay a price but it'll be worth every bit of it father i thank you for your word i pray that your people were motivated and stirred up and challenged to move into all that you have for them ask you now by your spirit firstly to bring a spirit of conviction a strong conviction a stirring of that sleeping giant your body would wake up pick up the weapons that they've dropped and stand tall and say i'm ready to be equipped i'm ready to be trained and show me the way caramando silice i believe the lord is speaking to somebody right now the lord's not condemning you conviction is never condemnation conviction simply means to be convinced the lord's saying to you that desire that's deep down in your heart that you've pushed aside and perhaps your thought was the imagination of your mind the lord says i put that desire in you that's why it was there and the reason i put that desire in you is because that's what i want to do in and through you if you let that desire fan back into flame let it consume you says the lord i will take you to the next step and beyond and i will use you far beyond anything you can imagine if i hold not back anymore says the lord but step out boldly in my name make a decision make a choice i'm standing here ready to take you by the hand and lead you the rest of the way you may be thinking you know i i don't have anybody that i can go to who carries an anointing the lord never allowed me to have anybody to go to you have someone you can go to cover who carries all the anointing and his name is jesus and if you'll take the time out to be in his presence on a regular basis if you'll spend time listening to his word let him speak to you if you'll spend time just being with him they could say of you as they said of early disciples how did these guys get this only one way they spent time with jesus and it changed them it's all it's going to take begins to rub off on you after a while you spend time listening to him you start thinking like him after a while when you're walking down the street and you're taking him with you you won't have to think i wonder if i should do this because you'll know what he wants to do and you'll work with him to do it we should all be operating this way and i believe you can also thank you for it father in the name of jesus i pray that your word will
