Before we begin, let me ask a simple question: Do you speak with other tongues?

Okay, then the next question: How often do you speak in tongues, or, to be more specific, when did you last speak in tongues? What motivates you to speak in tongues, or when do you find yourself doing it? When do you do it the most?

We will practice some tongues shortly, but before we do, I want also to ask if you have ever sung in tongues.

Changing Tongues

Okay, one more question: Do you always use the same tongue, or can you choose a different one? I want you to think about this and be more aware when you pray in tongues. When do you find yourself changing to a different tongue?

What about spiritual warfare? When I first got the liberty to speak in tongues, I struggled at first, and when I finally got it, I was not sure this was the real thing. So I asked the Lord to give me a tongue that sounded like a tongue, and one language I could never speak naturally was the kind of African language with many clicks in it.

Rebuking The Devil in Tongues

Suddenly, I began speaking using clicks, which I did not think my mouth was capable of. It seemed to carry such power that the first time I tried rebuking demons in tongues, I found it to be the most aggressive language I could think of. I still use clicks when rebuking demons in tongues.

For most people, there is a regular tongue that they use all the time. Sometimes, this changes over time. However, you may find that when the Lord leads you to do something different, like intercede in the spirit, you end up using a new tongue.

Adding Music to tongues

When you add music to tongues, they gain a new power. I have not done much teaching on praise and worship, but I plan to do more soon. There is a power there when you add music. In my teachings on mantles, I also showed that you can activate a mantle using tongues.

Using Breathing

I recently shared that you can learn to tap into your inner resources by breathing in deeply and imagining you are drawing water out of an underground well. However, I originally taught that the best way to do this is to speak in tongues.

Some years ago, I heard preachers speak about the importance of speaking in tongues for long periods of time. I remember one of them was Norvel Hayes, and I only listened to him because I was going through all the faith preachers at that time.

Praying in Tongues For Extended Period

So, I decided to try what he suggested. I sat down in prayer time and tried to pray for an hour in tongues. After 5 minutes, you think you have been going an hour, but your watch disappoints you

But if you keep it up, you eventually get a break through. When I first experienced this, I thought of the sports term "Second Wind.” It is an experience a runner has when they pass a stage of exhaustion. But then, suddenly, something kicks in, and they get a new burst of energy. They feel like they can now run forever.

Like Drilling Down Into the Ground

In trying to explain this experience, I saw the process of speaking in tongues, like drilling into the ground to sink a borehole. Now, in nature, it goes like this: At first, the digging is easy because you are only removing loose soil. But then you begin to hit layers of rock.

And if there is an underground stream there, it is likely located in rocks. It flows through a cavity in the rock. So when you drill through the rock into that underground stream, you suddenly get a gusher. The same thing happens when they strike oil.

Hitting A Gusher

I realized that what had happened to me was that I had broken through the rock and now hit a gusher, which produced the ‘second wind’ experience. Now, the fantastic thing is that after this experience, it all changed. I now no longer had to pray long enough to hit the water. I could just close my eyes and reach out, and He was there, and the anointing was there.

Clearing The Dirt Out

Now, all I needed to do was keep that channel open. One of the experiences that goes with this, which is also explained by digging in the natural, is that when you begin to drill down in tongues, your mind becomes filled with junk. All the movies you watched recently or other worldly experiences come into your mind.

That is because when the water starts to come out, it first clears the hole of all the sand poured into it from the drilling. This is another reason why few people maintain speaking.

But if you keep speaking, the dirty, muddy water begins to clear. So, your first “revelations” might look like a load of junk. But if you keep going, the water will begin to clear, and you will start to see visions and receive revelations in the Spirit.

It is worth pushing for a while until you get a breakthrough. It may take several days of praying in tongues daily, but you can learn to start the flow no matter what you are doing.

Praying Under Your Breath

Even while sitting at work, you can begin praying in tongues under your breath. After a while, it becomes easier and begins to flow, and you find yourself doing it without thinking.

Now, you are in a position where the Lord can quickly get your attention, reveal something, or give you direction.

The Language of Your Spirit

I want you to grasp today not just the importance of tongues. But the fact that tongues is the language of your spirit. It is not the language of the Holy Spirit.

Paul says that when you pray in tongues, your spirit is praying. If you consider what I have taught about the inner resources God has given us, your spirit is the only part of you that has full and easy access to them.

So, if you want to benefit from those resources, you need to learn to listen to your spirit and follow its instructions. The Bible calls this Walking in the Spirit.

If you come to the Lord to receive direction from Him, it will always come via your spirit. One of the easiest ways to tap into this is to use words, because our words come from our spirit. Words are the containers of what is in your spirit.

If you could understand what your spirit is saying, you could easily find out what God is saying.

Journaling

One of the easiest ways to hear from God is through a process we call journaling. I journal most days and Have created a program online to record all my journals. They are saved and given titles and the date received, so I can go back at any time to see what the Lord said to me recently—or even a year ago.

When the Lord speaks to you in this way, you are receiving, not logos words, but rhema words. With practice, you can tap into what your spirit tells you. And as it comes into your mind, you write it down.

Once you begin the flow, you will find yourself writing things you did not plan to say. But what I find even more powerful is receiving prophetic words from the Lord.

Prophesying Over Yourself

The Lord showed me years ago that in order to learn to prophesy over people, I had to first learn to prophesy over myself. When I first gained the ability to speak in tongues, I saw that Paul said you should pray for the ability to interpret your tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:13 Therefore let he that speaks in an [unknown] tongue pray that he might [be able to] interpret.

14 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit is praying, but my mind [nous] is unfruitful. [GBMV]

Your spirit is doing all the work, and you are standing by as a bystander. So, if you need direction, you should learn to interpret what your spirit is saying.

Interpreting Your Own Tongues

And now, when I come to journal, I wait on the Lord for an utterance in tongues instead of just writing. Then, I interpret my tongue and record it on my phone. And it comes out more powerfully like a prophetic word.

Originally, transcribing my recording was a lot of work, but I eventually found an online program that could quickly and accurately convert it into a normal journal.

So now I always have my phone with me. Often, when I have questions or need a word from the Lord, I sense the urge to speak in tongues.

I start the audio recording app on my phone and record my interpretation. Then I put it through the transcriber and capture the text to my journal history.

Often, when we come to the Lord in prayer, we are not sure how to pray, especially if it is for someone else. We do not fully understand their needs or God’s purpose in their lives, so I just pray in tongues.

But now, what if I could understand what I just prayed in tongues? You can ask the Lord for the ability to interpret, and you can interpret your tongues and find out what you just prayed.

I remember many years ago when I would pray with my parents. My late Dad seemed to understand what I said in tongues. One night, something rose up in me, and I rebuked the devil in tongues.

My Dad laughed and said to me, “Do you know what you just said to the Devil?” Then he told me.

So now I have learned that no matter what the need or even the current ministry need, my spirit knows more than I do. I make full use of my spirit's power in ministry.

Intercessory Tongues

Sometimes, your prayer becomes an intercessory prayer, and your tongue changes. But what exactly did you pray? If you cannot interpret your tongue, you may never know.

Sure, you can count on the Lord to use you correctly. But sometimes, it is helpful to know what your spirit is doing. You may see pictures in your mind while speaking in tongues that could help. But often, it is good if you can interpret your tongues. Then you can stand in agreement with your spirit 😀

One thing is for sure - your mind could get it wrong, but your spirit never misses it.

For those of you who have flowed in giving prophetic words. You can easily move into interpreting of tongues. It comes the same way.

Next time you sense a spontaneous urge to speak in tongues, try this: Ask the Lord for the interpretation and speak it out like a prophecy. With practice, you will become more confident in this.

Exercising Your Spirit

Remember, all those powerful spiritual resources are sitting deep inside you like treasure. But only your spirit has full access to them. So exercise your spirit to access them. Speaking in tongues is a form of spiritual exercise.

Also, the more you speak in tongues, the more you begin to recognize the voice of your own spirit. So, if you are going along minding your own business and suddenly something rises up deep inside you, you will know right away that your spirit is trying to communicate something to you from the Holy Spirit.

Responses of the Soul

This is what Walking in the Spirit is about. Yes, your soul will pick up the urgency of the spirit; You may find your speaking becoming louder or more aggressive. Just follow along.

When the Lord began to lead me into prophetic ministry, I found that whenever I was about to minister to someone, I would prepare my heart by praying in tongues until I felt the flow. Of course, just using tongues does not help the person unless, as Paul says, you can interpret it. So practice and develop this ability.

I would like to encourage you to try speaking in tongues more this week. You do not need a particular prayer time for it. You can do it freely while driving to work. And you can even do it under your breath at work.

The more you exercise your spirit, the easier it becomes to tap into that internal anointing when you need it.

You do not need to wait for the anointing to come upon you. You can reach deep inside and pull it out whenever you need to.

When Peter and John met the beggar at the beautiful gate, they had not yet had time to go and pray and get in the spirit. They were on their way to the prayer meeting.

So, Peter reached deep inside himself to draw out the needed healing power. He told the man, “I can give you what I do have.” He just released the power through words and action.

Adding Music to Tongues

Adding music to your speaking in tongues should never be considered professional. You make up the melody as you go - do not take a well-known melody and add words in tongues.

It is easy to sing by simply going up the scale ad-lib. We all know Doh, Ray, Me, etc. However, there are specific notes that make up a chord in music. If you consider the doh ray me, it is a musical scale of 7 notes. However, a chord will only use the first, third, and fifth notes.

If you strum a guitar, you will be playing the notes of a chord, and you can easily sing by just moving through the notes of the cord. The notes of a song are all found in the cord being played.

When you sing a note not in that chord, then another chord needs to be played. For simple music, there are three primary chords. But you can sing using just one chord. You just go up and down the scales.

As you do this, make up your melody. And the spirit will give you the words to add. If you ever meet with us, you will see that we always follow a pattern in worship. We begin singing normal songs in English. Then, we move into free worship.

As we play the three primary chords of a major key, we begin to make up a song that matches the music. Sometimes, I make up a song using English words. But it is easier to move into tongues, so you do not need to think.

This produces a good stir in your soul, stirring your emotions. Music causes the spirit, soul, and body to harmonize. It is easier than following the words on the overhead.

Practical Poject

So, your project this week is to get to know your spirit better. Make time to speak in tongues until you get used to the sound of your own spirit and begin to recognize its deep workings in you.

Recoup wasted time like driving, waiting at traffic lights, or even standing in queues. Pray under your breath with people all around you. Just decide to do it whenever you are wasting time and inactive.

You will be amazed at the power that is released inside you. The next time you get impatient because nothing is happening, just begin to speak in tongues.

The enemy will soon get you busy to stop you. But you will begin to tap into your inner resources and establish a flow of His presence.

Someone said that serving the Lord is so simple we need help misunderstanding it. Sometimes, you need to throw out the box in your head that tries to reason everything out.
