Overcoming Sickness Poverty and Loneliness - Chapter 3 of 16

A Look at Blessings vs. Curses
I want you to see something else in these curses that were pronounced by God. This is the very first occurrence of the word curse, and I want you to see a few things that are associated with this word.
You will see that there was a loss involved. The serpent lost something that he had before. Adam and Eve also lost something that they had before.
There was destruction that came in, and there was enmity, strife and conflict. Can you see those three things in that passage? They all suddenly appeared because the curse appeared.
I am not going to deal with it in detail here, because we have dealt with it elsewhere. In The New Way of Blessing: Using Your Blessing we deal with breaking curses. I have also dealt with it in other places.
A curse involves destruction, theft or loss, and conflict or strife. We are going to be looking at how Satan uses those to destroy our health and to cause sickness and disease.
Satan Destroys Flesh
Satan has power over the flesh. He is the destroyer; the one who destroys and causes your body to decay and to rot.
How do I know that? I want to show you a couple of verses in the New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 5:3 Paul says these words.
For I truly, though absent physically, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, [concerning] he that has so done this deed.
He was speaking about someone who was committing incest in the church. And he says in verses 4 and 5,
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To hand such a person over to Satan for (what?) the destruction of the flesh..
That is what he does best. Satan is the destroyer of the flesh. The moment you hand somebody over to Satan, you are handing them over to destruction of the flesh.
Satan's prime role in the life of a human being is to destroy your flesh. He hates your body. He wants it out of the way and he wants to destroy you.
There is an interesting little verse in Jude which is a simple little book in the New Testament. In Jude 1:9, Jude says these words.
Yet Michael the archangel, when arguing with the devil he was disputing about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a slanderous accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke you.
Jude tells us something we do not read anywhere else in the Bible. We do not even read it in the Old Testament.
The Bible says that Moses died and God buried him. We read later on that Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration.
I cannot make a doctrine out of this because the Bible does not tell us enough. But somewhere along the line there seems to be an indication that Moses' body was preserved by God, and God buried him and hid him in a secret place.
The moment Moses died, the destroyer was there to claim his body and to destroy it.
God made sure that the body of Moses was preserved and He sent the highest warrior angel in the heavenly realm, the Archangel Michael, to go and protect that body and to stop the destroyer from getting in and claiming it.
The Scripture says,
In the mouth of two or three witnesses let everything be established.
I have given you two or three witnesses. There is enough proof and indication in Scripture that Satan is the destroyer and the one who is set to destroy the flesh.
Anything that destroys the flesh or your body does not originate from God but from Satan.
He will use everything at his disposal, and he has millions of germs and viruses out there.
He made them in special cultures. It took him years. He prepared them specially and he is coming up with new ones all the time that he can use to destroy, and if he cannot use that he will use other means.
He will use conflict and strife and cause people to murder and kill each other, but he will use every method that he can to destroy the human body.
By far his most powerful is sickness and disease, germs and viruses that are controlled by spiritual powers. They are demon possessed viruses. That is why they do not respond to treatment.
They cannot, because how can you treat a physical problem that is caused by a spiritual power? How can you treat it with a physical solution when it is a spiritual problem?
Spiritual Power in Physical Matter
How can spirit affect matter?
This is an interesting concept. As we looked at curses, we saw that there are objects that can be contaminated with evil powers. We saw in the Word of God that objects can also be impregnated with God's power.
We see that Paul had aprons that were taken from his body. Then as they were laid on other people, the people were healed. There was a power in those garments.
It is possible for spiritual power to be contained in physical things. It is also possible for spiritual power to be contained in a physical body.
The power of God so radiated from Jesus, that the woman with the issue of blood just reached out and touched the hem of His garment and she was healed. It was a spiritual power that was emanating from there.
Covenant Blessing and Cursing
I want to carry on a little more about the curse. In the Old Testament, when God called out the nation of Israel and made them His chosen people, He entered into a covenant with them.
He offered them an opportunity to overcome that curse which started way back in the Garden of Eden; the one that brought sickness and disease, suffering and death.
God promised the Israelites this. In Deuteronomy 28:1 and 2 it says,
And it will come to pass, if you will listen diligently to the voice of the LORD your God, to observe [and] to do all his commandments which I command you this day, that the LORD your God will set you on high above all nations of the earth:And all these blessings shall come on you, and overtake you, if you will listen attentively to the voice of the LORD your God.
God spoke of wonderful blessings of prosperity and divine health. But then in verse 15 it says this.
But it shall come to pass, if you will not pay heed to the voice of the LORD your God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you this day; that all these curses shall come upon you, and overtake you:
The rest of the chapter is a list of all the curses, and most of the items listed are sickness, suffering and disease. They were a curse.
Sickness is not a blessing; it is a curse. It does not come down from the Father of lights. When they refused to walk in what God was offering them in His covenant, they became subject to the destructive power that Satan had over them.
In the book of Job you see the same thing. God spoke concerning Job and said,
"Look how wonderful he is."
Then Satan came and said,
"Yes it's easy; you've protected him."
Satan then went out and destroyed Job. He hit him with boils and pain and suffering. Satan is the author of the curse, but do not worry because I will get to the solution shortly.
We are not going to just talk about the negatives. But there is a curse that came into the world through sin, and that curse gave Satan license to attack and to destroy humanity.
There is also the law of judgment, and in the New Testament Jesus said,
Do not judge so that you are not judged, for with the same judgment you judge you shall be judged; and with the same measure you use, it shall be measured to you again.
There is a kind of a judgment that takes place there that we have a control over.
God has offered us a solution in Christ and we will look at that shortly. Paul speaks about this because when Jesus came He came with a body that was made like Adam's originally. It was not tainted with sin, and it was not subject to a curse.
We have no record of Jesus having caught a cold. Yes He was mortal and He could have died, but not from sickness and disease.
Satan used the only method that he had available. That was to have Him killed by Herod. But God was one up on him there and protected Him. They tried to kill Him many times, but could not. It was only once Jesus took our sins that Satan succeeded in killing Him.
Communion Blessing
In 1 Corinthians 10:16 Paul speaks about the communion and he says,
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
The church is called the Body of Christ. That means that spiritually we have become His body, and the body of Jesus was not subject to sickness or disease or decay. He was the last Adam. In verse 17 he says,
For we being many are one bread and one body, for we are all partakers of that one bread.
Paul gives a hint here at the communion table in 1 Corinthians 11:29 when he says:
For he that eats and drinks irreverently, eats and drinks condemnation to himself, not distinguishing the Lord's body.
They do not recognize the fact that the body of Christ contains an element of healing and protection from sickness and disease. Then he says,
For this reason many [are] weak and sickly among you, and many are asleep.
He is giving us a hint here already that there is a solution to the problem of sickness and disease. We are going to go on and look at that shortly. I am just mentioning that here in passing.
Family Generational Curses
Curses can come from contamination from other people. One of the strongest contaminations is from family generations. You might say,
"You do not need to read the Bible to know that. I mean everybody who knows a bit about medical science knows that if you have a family history of heart disease you are going to get it.
If people in your family have been dying of cancer, then be sure you will get it too. It is in the genes."
That is nonsense. Sickness and disease are not caused by physical sources. They are caused by spiritual sources.
Yes it is in the spiritual genes. It comes from family generations, by spiritual transmission. In Exodus 20:5 and 6 when God gave the law to Israel He said,
You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth [generation] of those that hate me; And showing mercy to thousands of those that love me and keep my commandments.
God is saying, "There will be family generational curses from those who have turned away from me and given Satan license in their life."
Spiritual Contamination or Blessing
Paul said to Timothy,
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be a partaker of other men's sins.
Are you worried about contagious diseases that you might catch from other people?
You do not realize that the worst contagious disease you can get comes from spiritual contamination from other people and the curses that are on their lives.
The strongest contamination comes from the family generations. But God says,
"I'm only going to limit that to three or four generations. The devil is not going to have a heyday here. But to those who walk in my blessing, it will be for thousands of generations."
You know God can bless in the same way. There is also blessing that can be passed down by contamination with others or by physical objects.
Look at what happened with Elisha. In 2 Kings 13:21 we read how they were having a funeral. It says,
And it happened, as they were burying a man, that they noticed a band [of men]; and they cast the man into the tomb of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he came back to life, and stood up on his feet.
Elisha had so much power that it was still in his bones. There was enough power there to raise somebody from the dead.
Well what kind of germs were those? Do we get anti-germs like we get anti-matter? Do we get healing germs and healing viruses?
If it is viruses and germs that cause death, then what causes life? We are talking about spiritual powers here, not physical influences.
The root of all sickness and disease is spiritual power, not from God but from Satan who is the destroyer. What did God say? He said,
The thief has come to steal, and to kill and to destroy. But I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly.
Can you see the curse there? It is to steal (theft), to kill (strife) and to destroy (destruction). They all come from the enemy, from Satan.
