Living An Abundant Life - Chapter 5 of 17

The Sign of Fear

There is one door, especially that I want to speak about here. I want to look at this in a bit more detail because this is the first sign of a curse being present. Not only will you see theft, strife, and destruction, but you will suddenly begin to experience fear.

Instead of faith, which God is giving and you can use with the arm of faith, you get fear which neutralizes all faith. Actually what it does is become faith in reverse.

Fear creates the very thing you don't want. And so Job in that Scripture we looked at in the beginning said,

"The thing that I have greatly feared has arrived. It has come into my life. I wasn't looking for it and I didn't want it. I was afraid of it, but here it is."

Job was so afraid, that he went out of his way to offer sacrifices for all his family and children. Then Satan came and wiped them all out in one shot. That is when Job said,

"The thing I feared has come on me."

If you continue to give in to fear, you continue to open a door to the demonic realm because you are under a curse. You give Satan a license to destroy.

Whenever there is a curse there will always be fear, not just ordinary fear. Some fear is good. If a poisonous spider runs over me I am not going to say,

"Oh, pretty little spider."

Some people do that but I don't. That thing could be poisonous and could hurt me. If I see a snake I am going to take out a stick or run, because I know that thing can hurt me.

These are natural things. We avoid dangerous things in life and this is a fear which protects us. But the kind of fear I am talking about here is an overwhelming one that you can't control.

It is a fear that comes out of nowhere. You don't want it to be there, but it takes over and it paralyzes you. You are afraid to do anything or go anywhere because of fear.

Satan has you all tied up. It is like you have a rope all the way around you, and you are just lying there helpless and unable to move.

Thinking About Fear

The door of fear has been opened. And that door gets even wider as you meditate on it. The more you think about it, the worse it gets.

The pictures that are created in your mind by fear overwhelm your emotions. This is a natural phenomenon. Whatever is in your mind affects your emotions.

If you are thinking good thoughts you get good emotions. If you are thinking bad thoughts you get bad emotions. Whatever pictures you keep in your mind begin to affect the way you feel.

Fear paints these pictures in your mind. And if you allow those pictures to remain there and you meditate on them and think about them, it is going to get worse.

You feel a pain in your body and fear comes. You think,

"Is this something serious? Maybe it is cancer or a pending heart attack. Maybe one of my organs is packing in. What can it be?"

The more you meditate on it you think,

"This could get worse. I could get really sick and I could die."

Now you are seeing the funeral. You are seeing the coffin, the hearse, and the cemetery. It just gets worse and worse. Eventually, you are totally overwhelmed with fear because you kept those pictures in your mind.

Speaking Your Fear

You can widen the door even further by putting pictures of fear into your mouth. The moment you begin to express your fears the pictures become established.

It is very difficult to not see when you are speaking. I can look at a glass of water and say,

"I am thirsty. My mouth is really dry."

Then I just can't resist the temptation to grab that glass and have a drink of water.

Your feelings become overwhelmed by the pictures that you have been putting in your mind. And when you speak words you establish those pictures.

Speaking the Opposite

This is a very important thing to know because you can actually speak good words and create good emotions. In fact, that is one of the best ways to overcome fear.

Instead of speaking your fears, speak the opposite. Instead of looking for the disease, look for the healing. But what is our first response? We say,

"Oh dear, I have a pain. I wonder what sickness or disease that is. I wonder if I have something."

Then we visualize and speak the sickness instead of saying,

"Hang on, by His stripes I have been healed. God is my healer. I don't have to suffer. Thank you, Lord, for my healing."

But we don't talk about healing. We talk sickness. And the more you speak about it, the more you convince yourself and put yourself in a corner until you can't get out.

So someone may say to you,

"How are you feeling today?"

You might say, "I feel terrible! I woke up this morning with such a headache. I hope it's not something serious. Maybe my blood pressure is high. Maybe I'm going to burst a blood vessel and have an aneurysm. I could have a stroke."

You are saying, "Come on devil, open the door wide. Here I am. Hit me."

That is what you are doing. Instead you should be saying,

"I have a bit of pain in my head. Thank you, Lord, for healing me right now in the name of Jesus. I thank you for your touch, Lord. Headache, leave now in Jesus' name!"

That changes it, and the more you see the positive picture, the more you see the picture of you going out in health and strength and living a long life. You open the door to the heavenly realm, and you reach in with your arm of faith and say,

"I receive my healing now. Be healed."

But you want to open the other door all the time and you get paralyzed with fear. You think you are a poor little victim. No, you are not a victim. You're an idiot because you listened to the lies!

Satan's Lies

The Scripture tells us that Satan is the father of lies. When you open the door of fear, he comes in and seals the door of faith. And while you are meditating on your fears, it is impossible for you to exercise faith.

You want to reach up with the arm of faith but it has become paralyzed. You can't move and you're stuck. You try to reach out to the Lord but you can't get through.

Why? Because you believed a lie. The Scripture says in John 8:44 that Satan cannot tell the truth. He's a liar and the father of lies. Jesus said he was a liar from the beginning.

That means you should not believe what he tells you. It's not true. If you do believe him, you immediately give him control in your life.

Do you know what Satan's biggest lie is? It is fear. Fear is the biggest lie that he can give you because he knows when you begin to fear, you stop believing. And fear opens the door to those three elements of a curse.

Closing the Door

The first thing then you need to do if you want to close that door, is some way of overcoming that lie. You need something to counter it, go against it, and neutralize it, because Satan can be very convincing with his lies.

You need something that will stop the fear.

What is the best way to overcome a lie? It is the truth, which is the total opposite, isn't it? One is darkness; the other one is light. A lie can only be overcome by the truth.

If someone tells you a lie, the easiest way to overcome that lie is to show them that that is not true. You can say to them,

"This is the truth, so your lie doesn't hold any water."

So Satan comes and tells you that you are sick, you have something serious and you are going to die. He tells you that your finances are going to be destroyed. You are going to be poor, they will take your car back and you are not going to be able to pay the bills.

If he tells you that you need something to counteract that lie. You need something that is the truth.

Knowing the Truth

There are two things that give us the truth. In John 8:32 Jesus said,

And you will come to know the truth [real thing], and that truth [or reality] will set you free.

Jesus made it more clear when He prayed to the Father in John 17:17. He said,

Father sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth.

Do you want to know the best truth to overcome the lie of the devil? It is the Word of God. But you have been listening to the devil's lies for so long, did you ever get into the Word to find out what it says?

What does the Word say about your health? What does it say about your finances? Get yourself established in the truth. Fill your mind with the truth and start to speak those words. Because when you speak them, it creates positive pictures that will overcome the fear.

Not only is God's Word the truth, but His Spirit is also the truth. We have both. We have His Word and we have His Spirit dwelling within us. Jesus said in John 15:26,

But when the Comforter has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, namely the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify concerning me.

The Written Word

You need to hear the Word of God. Firstly you need to hear His written Word.

It is great if you can hear the preaching of the Word. But you don't have to wait for that. You have the Bible right there, in printed form, if you are one of the old-school people.

I don't read printed books anymore. It is too hard on my eyes. I like to have everything on a little screen, and I have every book that I could ever need on my phone. I can take my whole library with me.

In the old days, I used to buy a lot of books. I had big bookshelves full of books, and every time we had to move I had to get rid of all my books.

It is great when you are moving from town to town. But when you move from country to country, you can't take all those books with you.

This made me switch to buying books in e-book form and keeping them on my phone. When we left Mexico I had a lot of books again that I had bought and that I had to sell.

The first time we went to Mexico it was even worse. I had accumulated books for years in South Africa. But then I began to put them on my phone. When we got on the plane to come back to South Africa, I brought all my books with me on my phone and they are still there.

I am not trying to say you should do that, but I am saying you should do that if you have any sense. It is so much easier to do that. It is even cheaper to buy e-books than it is to buy printed books. But I hear people saying,

"I like the printed page. I like to curl up in bed with a book."

Well, I curl up in bed with my phone. I can even read in the dark because of the bright screen. I am one of the older generations, and I see young people who are still caught in the old way of doing things.

If I was the owner of Amazon I might talk differently because I want you to buy books, but they sell e-books too. Whatever it takes, get yourself into the Word and get the Word in you.

I have the Bible on my phone as well as my books. I have everything that I need.

The Spoken Word

Get the written Word into you and get into the written Word. But it is not only the written word that helps you because the strongest builder of faith is not the written word. It is the spoken word.

That may help when someone is preaching the Word because when they are preaching the Word they are preaching what is written. But they are adding an extra dimension. They are making it live. They are not only saying,

"God said this."

They are saying, "God is saying this to you right now."

That means the logos word becomes a rhema word; a word that is active in the mouth. If you continue to fill yourself with the logos word, eventually it starts to pop up out of your subconscious. While you are even sitting thinking, immediately a Scripture pops into your mind.

You come to the Lord in prayer and say,

"Oh Lord please touch my body. It is sore."

Then out comes a Scripture that says,

By His stripes you were healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

In the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow. (Philippians 2:10)

Ask and you shall receive. (John 16:24)

The Scriptures pop up and they are not just words that were written to somebody else. It is God speaking them right to you. That is the rhema word.

When the Scripture says that faith comes by hearing the word of God, it uses rhema, not logos. When the rhema rises up in you, faith is born. And faith is one of the best ways to overcome fear.

There is another one which we will look at shortly. So get into the Scriptures and fill yourself with them. Get into the Spirit and hear His voice speaking directly to you, and faith will be produced.

Focus on His Love

The next thing you need to tap into is God's love. How do you get that?

Love is a fruit of the Spirit. It is created by the Holy Spirit living inside of you. And if you will allow the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you and control your life, love will automatically start to come out of you.

Believe it or not, love is the strongest force that there is to overcome fear. John tells us this in 1 John 4:18.

There is no fear in [agape] love; but mature [agape] love casts out fear:

How do you do this? One of the best things that you can start with is to get your eyes off yourself.

You might say, "Poor little me. I'm sick and nearly dying. Finances are bad. Oh Lord, help."

All we do is wail and talk about ourselves. We tell people all about our problems and about how bad we feel. Then we wonder why nobody wants to be around us.

Get your eyes off yourself and start seeing the needs of other people around you. That is the first step to manifesting love.

Ask the Lord to use you as a channel of His love and start to become more other-oriented, instead of self-oriented. That alone will start to dispel the fears. This is because fear keeps us locked up in ourselves and we say,

"Poor little me. I'm afraid something is going to happen to me."

Get your eyes off yourself. Start looking out to others and start becoming a blessing to other people.
